The countdown to the 2026 Preakness Stakes is on, and the field is set for a thrilling showdown at Laurel Park on May 16. But if you're hoping to see the Kentucky Derby winner in the starting gate, you'll have to wait a little longer.
Golden Tempo, who delivered a breathtaking last-to-first victory at Churchill Downs on May 2, will not compete in the Preakness. Trainer Cherie DeVaux made the decision quickly, prioritizing the colt's long-term health over the quick turnaround. "Golden gave us the race of a lifetime," DeVaux said. "We believe the best decision for him moving forward is to give him a little more time following such a tremendous effort." Instead, Golden Tempo is being pointed toward the Belmont Stakes on June 6.
This marks the second consecutive year—and the third time in five years—that the Derby winner has skipped the Preakness, even when healthy. The reason is almost always the same: two weeks just isn't enough time to recover from the grueling Run for the Roses. The trend began in 2019 when Country House, who won the Derby via disqualification, was scratched. Since then, Maryland's racing leaders have considered moving the Preakness back one week to the fourth Saturday in May, but no change has been made yet.
Of the 14 horses entered in this year's Preakness, only three made the trip from Churchill Downs. None of them won the Derby, but one nearly pulled off the biggest upset in recent memory. For fans who love the drama of the Triple Crown trail, this year's Preakness promises plenty of excitement—even without the Derby champion in the field.
