The Arizona Cardinals made headlines by selecting Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love in the 2026 NFL Draft—a move that sent shockwaves through the organization. While the ripple effects could eventually lead to coaching or front office changes, one thing is certain: a prominent player on the current roster will likely be traded before the season kicks off.

General manager Monti Ossenfort already made waves in free agency by signing running back Tyler Allgeier, giving the Cardinals three capable halfbacks on the depth chart. That's a crowded but manageable situation for head coach Mike LaFleur. But adding Love to the mix changes everything. Suddenly, Arizona has four starting-caliber running backs—an embarrassment of riches that's too valuable not to leverage.

Since Love and Allgeier just arrived, they're staying put. That leaves two names on the trading block: Trey Benson and James Conner.

He posted back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing campaigns in 2023 and 2024, proving his tank isn't empty yet. Last season was the outlier—a rough start before the injury derailed everything. Even so, Conner remains a locker room leader and a mentor who can pass invaluable knowledge to younger backs like Love, helping them develop into NFL stars.

So, which running back gets dealt? All signs point to Benson being the more likely trade candidate, but don't count out a surprise move from Ossenfort. Either way, the Cardinals have a good problem on their hands—too much talent in the backfield.
