The countdown to IPL 2026 is on, and the BCCI has unveiled the playoff schedule, headlined by a blockbuster final at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 31. This decision, however, comes with a twist—Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, home of the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, has been notably excluded from hosting any knockout matches.
The shift in venue stems from a controversy that erupted early in the season. Ahead of RCB's opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar sparked outrage by demanding that each sitting MLA receive at least five complimentary IPL tickets. His comments, suggesting elected officials shouldn't have to queue like ordinary fans, drew immediate criticism. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar tried to defuse the situation by proposing a compromise: three tickets per home RCB match for MLAs and MPs for the remainder of the season. But the damage was done, and the BCCI ultimately decided to move the final away from Bengaluru.
As a result, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the grand finale on May 31, while the playoff action leading up to it will be shared between Dharamshala and New Chandigarh. The Qualifiers and Eliminator will take place at these scenic venues, offering a fresh backdrop for the high-stakes clashes.
For cricket fans, this means planning your playoff viewing around a new set of destinations. Ahmedabad's massive stadium is no stranger to hosting major events, including the 2023 ODI World Cup final, and promises an electric atmosphere for the title decider. Meanwhile, Dharamshala's picturesque HPCA Stadium and the newly developed venue in New Chandigarh add a touch of novelty to the knockout rounds.
