The Texas Longhorns softball team has slipped one spot to No. 5 in the latest NFCA national poll, a direct result of dropping their second consecutive SEC series, this time to the rival Oklahoma Sooners.
Oklahoma's series win in Austin propelled them to the coveted No. 1 ranking, edging out Texas Tech by a razor-thin margin. The Sooners received 12 first-place votes and 747 points, just two points ahead of the Red Raiders, who also had 12 first-place votes.
With 648 points, Texas now finds itself looking up at not only Oklahoma but also No. 3 Florida and No. 4 Alabama, underscoring the brutal competitiveness of the SEC. The conference's strength is on full display, claiming six of the top ten spots and placing ten teams in the poll overall, including Texas A&M at No. 12.
There's no time to dwell for the Longhorns (33-6, 10-5 SEC). The schedule remains unforgiving as they hit the road this weekend for another pivotal conference showdown, facing the No. 15 Georgia Bulldogs in Athens. Every game is crucial as Texas looks to regain momentum in the heart of the SEC gauntlet.
