Tuesday's win over New Orleans didn't do much for LSU baseball's RPI ranking. Jay Johnson and the Tigers still rank outside the top-60, coming in at No. 63. That means LSU has work to do if it wants to play postseason baseball.
LSU can climb the rankings this weekend with a trip to Mississippi State. The Bulldogs' RPI ranks No. 18 nationally, and if LSU can find a way to win the series, its RPI should make a significant jump.
LSU will have to do it without star outfielder Jake Brown, who will miss the remainder of 2026 with a broken hamate bone. That likely spells the end for Brown's LSU career, given his lofty MLB Draft projections. That wasn't the only bad injury news LSU got this week -- Johnson also announced starting pitcher Cooper Moore is done for the year, too.
At 6-12 in conference play, LSU ranks No. 14 in the SEC, far below where LSU expected to be after beginning the year ranked No. 2 in preseason polls. Still, all hope is not lost. Recent results haven't been promising, but LSU is talented and the program has a championship pedigree. The Tigers are capable of ripping off a couple of series wins if they play to their ceiling.
