The Jets finally rewarded Hall for his production, but where does he fit among running backs like Bijan Robinson and Christian McCaffrey?

When the New York Jets handed Breece Hall a three-year, $45.75 million extension, they didn't just lock up their star running back—they sent a clear message about his place among the NFL's elite. Hall now ranks as the third-highest paid player at his position, trailing only Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey. But where does he truly stand on the field heading into the 2026 season?

Few running backs have been as consistently productive as Hall despite inconsistent surroundings. Just shy of his 26th birthday, he has thrived even when the offense around him struggled. With the Jets' rebuilding plan gaining momentum, Hall's best days could still be ahead.

At the top of the mountain sits Bijan Robinson, who seized the mantle as the league's premier back in 2025. The Falcons star set a single-season franchise record with 2,298 all-purpose yards, including a career-high 1,478 rushing yards. His signature moment? A 93-yard touchdown sprint against the Rams in Week 16—the longest run in the NFL all season. Robinson's looming contract negotiations will undoubtedly be shaped by Hall's new deal, with two years remaining on his rookie deal.

Saquon Barkley may have had an off-year in 2025, but his 2024 campaign was nothing short of legendary. In his Eagles debut, Barkley rushed for over 2,000 yards in the regular season, then shattered Terrell Davis' 26-year-old record for combined rushing yards in a single season (including playoffs). The year ended with Barkley hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. With GM Howie Roseman's usual roster wizardry, expect a bounce-back 2026.

Christian McCaffrey remains one of the game's most versatile threats, even as Robinson has stolen some of his spotlight. After missing all but four games in 2024, McCaffrey rebounded to win Comeback Player of the Year in 2025 with 2,216 all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns. He came within 74 yards of becoming the first player ever with multiple 1,000-yard rushing and receiving seasons, and he extended his own record for 100-catch seasons by a running back to three.

Jonathan Taylor would have challenged for his second rushing title if not for Daniel Jones' season-ending injury in early December. Still, Taylor's production speaks for itself.

For fans and fantasy owners alike, the running back hierarchy is shifting. Hall's extension signals that the Jets believe he belongs in the conversation with the game's best—and the 2026 season will be his chance to prove it.
