Ten months before the next NCAA Tournament starts, Andy Katz is already making predictions. Check out where he puts UNC in his first 76-team pick.

It's never too early to start thinking about March Madness, and with the college basketball season still six months away, Andy Katz has already released his first 76-team NCAA Tournament bracket prediction for 2027. For UNC basketball fans, there's plenty to digest in these early projections.

The Tar Heels, coming off a season that saw them make their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance but fail to win a Round of 64 game for the second straight year, are projected as a No. 9 seed in the South Region in San Antonio. Katz has them facing No. 8 seed Ohio State, a program that narrowly missed advancing last March in a 66-64 heartbreaker to TCU.

This projection comes during a significant transition period for North Carolina. The team returns only one starter from last year—Jarin Stevenson, who finally gets his moment to shine as a senior. Terrence Brown headlines the new additions as the most high-profile transfer, while international center Sayon Keita brings promising size and presence in the paint.

Perhaps the biggest storyline, however, is the arrival of first-year head coach Michael Malone. After Hubert Davis was fired following UNC's blown 19-point lead against VCU in the tournament, Malone steps in with an impressive NBA pedigree, including leading the Denver Nuggets to the 2023 NBA Championship. As college basketball becomes increasingly professionalized, Malone's pro background and playoff success could translate well to the college game in Chapel Hill.

With rosters still being finalized and schedules yet to be released, Tar Heel Nation has plenty to look forward to. Championship expectations are always the standard at North Carolina, and fans will be eager to see if Malone can turn those expectations into a deep tournament run. Will UNC make its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance next March? And if so, can this team finally break through for the kind of success that defines Tar Heel basketball?
