It was a defining weekend in Aggieland, but not for the reasons Texas A&M fans had hoped. Amid a flurry of marquee events across campus, the Aggies baseball team stumbled, dropping their first SEC series since March and finishing the week with a 2–2 record. Despite the setback, they held steady at No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
The week started on a high note, as Texas A&M grinded out a gutsy win over a red-hot Tarleton State squad. The Texans have been turning heads this season, notching wins over Texas and Baylor while sitting atop the WAC standings. Head coach Michael Earley knew the midweek matchup would be no walk in the park, but the Aggies took care of business and turned their attention to a talented Auburn Tigers team rolling into Blue Bell Park.
Weather, however, had other plans. For the umpteenth time this season, rain forced the postponement of Friday’s opener, pushing it into a Saturday doubleheader. Texas A&M had been money in doubleheaders lately, but that streak came to a screeching halt. Auburn steamrolled in Game 1 and then held on in a nail-biter to clinch the series. The Aggies showed some fight in Game 3, avoiding the sweep with a much-needed bounce-back win.
With the regular season winding down, the road ahead only gets tougher. But make no mistake: Texas A&M is still a clear postseason contender. The bigger question is whether they can hold onto their spot in the NCAA Tournament hosting picture. For now, they remain a top-10 mainstay, and the next few weeks will tell us just how deep this squad can go.
