The Stars and Wild played another instant classic in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series, but the puck bounced Minnesota's way this time.
The home team evened things at two games apiece Saturday night, outlasting the Stars in the third overtime in the last two games. But even before the additional period, which ended with a Matt Boldy tip-in, there were plenty of up-and-downs, with four regulation goals and some excellent goaltending.
Here's what the Wild said after a Game 4 victory in St. Paul:
On battling back after falling behind: “I would say the last two games, I think we’ve hit some adversity in the games, where they’ve had a lead. I just think our mindset more is taking whatever the game’s giving us and coming out and playing and staying with it. You know I think we’ve done a good job of that. We’re focused on playing how we need to play regardless of the circumstances.”
On Matt Boldy and his game-winning goal: “Having the opportunity to be around Bolds with the Wild but also at the men’s world championships, the Four Nations and the Olympics, you see him play in big moments – I think that’s a personality trait. He can play when the heat gets turned up. He is a guy that has the ‘it factor.’”
On physicality wearing down the Dallas defense: “Well, it is a part of it. You keep doing it and do it the right way and continue to compete hard in the hard areas of the ice. I think as you see in the series, both teams are extremely competitive, and we talked with the guys about, you have be able to win the hard areas of the game. You do it, you do it, and over the course of time you get rewarded for it, and tonight we got rewarded for it.”
On Jesper Wallstedt: “I thought Wally was solid again. Very solid. There were some big momentum swings in the game where they kind of dictated for a while and then we dictated for a while but when we needed him the most, he came up big.”
On playing three overtimes in two games: “Well, it’s always hard on the body, but I feel like the guys looked great out there, even though we played so many minutes. My body feels great. I feel like we’re in a good position, even if we have to keep playing overtime games. We’re not worried about it.”
On keeping a calm demeanor: “I think over the course of the season we built up that resilience we know and even though we’re down one, or leading — whatever the game looks like — we’re playing 60 minutes and then we’ll go from there. If we have to play more, we’re ready to play more.”
On Wyatt Johnson hitting the post at the end of regulation: “The first the D shot I was kind of screen on, so I didn’t really see that, I didn’t see the release. I think it got tipped right in front of me, so I kind of picked it up there again, but I was a little bit out of position, I think. And after that, I knew the puck was behind me and I tried to just get my legs to the post and reach. Obviously, the guys did a great job keeping it out. We did what we had to to make sure that one didn’t go in.”
On emotions of close no goals earlier in the game: “Ah, not much, to be honest. The kick one I basically knew right away. It was just kind of a natural reaction, obviously not how I would want to play but just how it naturally happened. Emotionally wise, I knew that wasn’t a goal, so it wasn’t much of a swing.”
On handling the pressure of a big stage: “Yeah, it helps a bunch. Mentally for your confidence it helps a lot, I think. But in terms of not letting the moment get too big or get the best of you, I think that has gone a long way for us.”
On relationship with Jake Oettinger: “Yeah, obviously, we were with him for 4 Nations and the Olympics for a couple of weeks, so you get to know him. He's obviously a very gifted goalie. He makes a lot of saves, and he's been playing well, so we have just got to keep doing what we do, and get to the net and make a little bit harder on him.”
On winning this overtime game: “Relief. It’s another great game. I mean, really, goalies were unbelievable. And, just the back and forth and just the possession and physicality. We've got to expect just tight games for the rest of the series. And Bolds was was a beast today,”
On his game-tying goal: “It's special when you're a big guy out there and you've got Quinn and Fabes back there, it's really cool. You just kind of get to playing in front and they seem to find guys. So it's a good shot by Sturmy, and lucky to get a to get a piece before Oettinger could freeze it.”
On where the series goes from here: “We’ve been in 2-2 series before, and we've got to play a really good, smart, detailed game in Dallas. I think that's where we're going with that. The last two games have been great for us. I think the momentum of the game is something that we have to learn to control in Dallas.”
On the Foligno goal: “He did a great job getting to the net there. I thought he did a great job all night just with energy, with hits, just getting on the forecheck and creating stuff. His line did a great job of that and creating havoc in front of the net.”
On the Wild's struggling penalty kill: “Obviously, like to get some kilks, but there’s times I think we’re doing a good job and just a bounce there going the wrong way for us. So, we just gotta stick with it.”
