Indiana basketball has added a second 7-footer to its roster. Why that matters for the 2026-27 season

Indiana basketball just got bigger—literally. The Hoosiers added some serious height to their roster on Friday, landing a commitment from 18-year-old German center Clemens Sokolov. Standing at a towering 7 feet tall, Sokolov is the second 7-footer to join head coach Darian DeVries' squad, and his arrival could reshape the team's look for the 2026-27 season.

So, why does this matter? For starters, Sokolov fills a critical need for post depth. Last season, he averaged 6.4 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes per game for Wuerzburg in Germany's Pro B South league. While those numbers might not jump off the page, his size and experience overseas bring a physical presence that the Hoosiers have been craving.

With Sokolov now in the fold, DeVries has a formidable frontcourt trio. He joins SMU transfer Samet Yigitoglu (another 7-footer) and Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell, giving Indiana a deep rotation in the paint. This versatility means DeVries can confidently deploy two-big lineups, a strategy that could create mismatches on both ends of the floor. Imagine the defensive wall that Yigitoglu and Sokolov could form, or the rebounding dominance they could bring against Big Ten opponents.

The commitment was confirmed by IndyStar, with DraftExpress' Jonathan Givony first reporting the news. For Hoosier fans, it's a promising sign that the program is building a roster capable of competing at a high level. With Sokolov's arrival, Indiana's frontcourt just got a whole lot more imposing—and that's something to get excited about.
