The Duke Blue Devils have landed a commitment that has the college basketball world buzzing: a 7-foot center who hasn't even turned 17 yet. Meet Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, a five-star phenom coming from FC Barcelona's youth program to play for Jon Scheyer in Durham.
Standing at an imposing 7 feet tall, Boumtje Boumtje is still just 16 years old—he won't turn 17 until late May. That youth makes his commitment even more exciting for Duke fans. He originally hails from St. Petersburg, Florida, but moved to Spain as a teenager to develop in Barcelona's elite system. This past season, he played for Barca Liga U, the club's development program, where he put up impressive numbers: 16.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.
His game truly shined on the big stage, earning MVP honors at the adidas NextGen Tournament. There, he averaged 18.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, showcasing the versatility that makes him a special talent. According to Rivals, because of his age, he will be required to complete two years of college before becoming eligible for the 2028 NBA Draft.
Boumtje Boumtje also comes from basketball royalty. His father, Ruben Boumtje Boumtje, was originally from Cameroon, played college basketball at Georgetown, and was a second-round pick of the Portland Trail Blazers in 2001. Standing 7 feet tall himself, Ruben played 44 games in the NBA, giving his son a unique perspective on the game.
Duke's 2026 recruiting class is shaping up nicely, with Boumtje Boumtje joining fellow commits Cam Williams, Deron Rippey Jr., Bryson Howard, and Maxime Meyer. For a program known for developing future NBA stars, landing a player with this much potential at such a young age is a major win. Keep an eye on this young big man—he's just getting started.
