Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has called for calm and patience as the five-time champions find themselves anchored at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table. In a candid post-match press conference, Jayawardene backed his senior stars—Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma—insisting that the team's struggles are a temporary phase in a long season.
The spotlight has been firmly on Suryakumar Yadav, India's T20 World Cup captain, who has managed just 183 runs in nine matches. This is a stark contrast to his record-breaking 2025 campaign, where he amassed 717 runs. Despite the dip, Jayawardene remains unfazed. "I don't think his output is down," he said. "If he gets a few scores together, he'll find that rhythm. He played really well today, really took on the bowlers. Another couple of overs and he could have been off for a big score. Sometimes when things aren't going your way, it doesn't fall into place. He's in a good space; it's just a matter of time."
For Tilak Varma, the season has been a tale of two extremes. On April 20, he smashed an unbeaten 101 off 45 balls against Gujarat Titans—a historic individual performance. But beyond that brilliant century, his contributions have been minimal. Jayawardene emphasized the importance of perspective. "Tilak is still learning. These are the experiences that shape a player. We have to be patient and let him develop," the coach explained.
As for Jasprit Bumrah, the pace spearhead has shouldered a heavy bowling load, but even his magic has not been enough to turn MI's fortunes around. Jayawardene's message is clear: trust the process, back the players, and stay the course. For MI fans, the hope is that this storm will pass—and the champions will rise again.
