The future of LIV Golf is hanging in the balance—and with it, the careers of its players. The Saudi Public Investment Fund has pulled its support for the tour next season, leaving LIV scrambling for new investment or facing a complete collapse. For the players who jumped ship, that uncertainty is now personal.
LIV golfers are currently serving a one-year suspension from the PGA Tour, which began after their last LIV event. While a few—like Brooks Koepka—have managed to strike deals to return, most will need to find new homes by 2027 if LIV folds. But for many, the bridges are burned beyond repair. Phil Mickelson, for instance, filed a lawsuit against the PGA Tour after joining LIV, making a return there nearly impossible.
So what about the Champions Tour? That’s the question Richard Bland, a 53-year-old LIV veteran, recently addressed. Speaking at LIV Virginia, Bland revealed he’s planning a "semi-retirement" after this season, stepping away from full-time competition as his tour's future hangs by a thread. In theory, after serving his suspension, he'd be eligible for the Champions Tour—but Bland says he's been told otherwise.
"From what I’ve been told, I’m not hugely welcome there," Bland explained. "As far as I’m aware, I was never given the exemption—well, I wasn’t given the exemption. I’m the only senior major champion never to get that exemption, and that’s fine, I don’t have an issue with that. I think the Champions Tour has made it pretty much impossible for anybody to come and play."
Bland, who turns 54 this year, acknowledged the one-year ban but made it clear he won't chase a spot. "I’m not going to go chasing it. I got asked the other day, would you consider going back to DP World Q-School? No."
Not every senior LIV player will face the same cold shoulder, but Bland's case highlights a growing divide. For those who left the PGA Tour behind, the road back—even to the senior circuit—isn't just blocked; it's been paved over. As LIV's future teeters, players like Bland are left wondering where—if anywhere—they truly belong.
