In the world of snooker, few superstitions carry as much weight as the infamous "Crucible Curse." Since the World Snooker Championship moved to Sheffield's iconic Crucible Theatre in 1977, a daunting pattern has held strong: not a single first-time champion has successfully defended their title the following year.

This isn't just a minor trend; it's a formidable barrier that has defeated 20 champions. Legends of the game, including Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Selby, and Stephen Hendry—despite their multiple world titles—all fell victim to the curse after their maiden Crucible victories. The curse has proven relentless, with only Joe Johnson (1987) and Ken Doherty (1998) managing to fight their way back to the final in their title defense year, only to fall at the last hurdle.

Recent years have only reinforced the curse's power. In 2024, defending champion Luca Brecel was stunned in the first round by qualifier David Gilbert. The pattern continued in 2025 when Kyren Wilson, the 2024 winner, was knocked out in his opening match by debutant Lei Peifan.

All eyes now turn to Zhao Xintong, the 2025 champion, who will carry the hopes of breaking this 48-year-old hex when he returns to the hallowed Crucible stage in 2026. With the venue's hosting contract secured until 2045, the drama of the Crucible Curse is set to be a central storyline in snooker for decades to come.
