The Tigers are losing another key player this season.

The Detroit Tigers are facing another tough blow to their roster. After losing key pitchers Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal to extended injuries, the team has now placed All-Star infielder Gleyber Torres on the 10-day injured list.

According to Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press, Torres is sidelined with a left oblique strain. The injury has kept him out of action since May 2, and the move to the IL—made official on May 6—is retroactive to that date. That means Torres could be eligible to return as early as May 13, provided his recovery goes smoothly.

But oblique strains are notoriously tricky for baseball players. Even a seemingly minor strain can linger, affecting a hitter’s swing and power output. While there was initial optimism that Torres was trending in the right direction, this diagnosis puts his return timeline in question.

Torres, who signed a $22.025 million qualifying offer with the Tigers this past offseason, has been a steady presence in the lineup. Through the early part of the season, the 29-year-old former New York Yankees star is batting .259 with two home runs, 11 RBIs, and a .717 OPS. With Torres now on the shelf, the Tigers have called up Jace Jung from Triple-A Toledo to fill the infield void.

For a Detroit team already navigating significant pitching injuries, losing a veteran bat like Torres is another setback in what’s shaping up to be a challenging season. Torres, who will be a free agent after this year, will be looking to return healthy and finish the season strong—but first, he’ll need to let that oblique heal.
