The Phillies are slowly trudging to the end of a brutal April that has seen them own the worst record in baseball here on April 28th. They’re already 10.5 games back of the division entering play yesterday and seven games back in the Wild Card. They aren’t dead yet, but they need to turn things around sooner rather than later or the hole they’ve dug themselves will prove to be too big.
That turnaround will have to start now over the next two to three weeks. After slogging through 13 straight games against the Cubs and Braves, the Phillies now have 19 games coming up against the Giants, Marlins, A’s, Rockies, Red Sox, and Pirates. It’s hard to look down on other teams when you have one of the worst records in baseball, but this is a group that features multiple teams that are not forecasted to be serious contenders or are off to their own versions of a poor start. The Red Sox for one just cleaned house in the dugout, which could possibly have ramifications for the Phillies own coaching situation.
If the Phillies are going to crawl back into contention for a postseason start, that crawl will have to begin today. They must take advantage of this softer stretch of games to improve their record and attempt to dig up instead of down. So, what do you need to see over this next stretch of games? How many games do the Phillies need to win for you to feel that they’ve successfully started to turn their season around?
