Anthony Edwards made a statement—and we're not just talking about his game.
Listed as week-to-week after a scary left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, the Minnesota Timberwolves star shocked the basketball world by returning in just nine days. In Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the San Antonio Spurs, Edwards came off the bench and immediately reminded everyone why he's one of the league's most electric players.
Midway through the second quarter, Edwards hit a nasty fadeaway from the baseline. Moments later, he drained a pull-up jumper, turned toward the Spurs bench, and let them hear it: "I'M BACK."
For the 24-year-old four-time NBA All-Star, the message was clear. He backed it up, too, starting 3-for-3 from the field with no hesitation in his burst or jumping—despite the recent injury.
Edwards has been battling injuries all season—hamstring strains, a foot infection, and right knee issues have limited him to 61 games. On April 25, during Game 4 against Denver, his knee bent unnaturally, resulting in a bone bruise that had many expecting him to miss at least the first two games of the series.
But Edwards had other plans. Relying on hyperbaric chamber therapy and aggressive recovery methods, he accelerated a timeline that typically takes two weeks down to just nine days. Until 24 hours before tip-off, the team didn't expect him to be available.
"I'll go out that b**ch on one leg if I got to," Edwards said on Sunday. "I don't give a f**k."
His urgency made sense. With Minnesota's backcourt weakened by injuries to Donte DiVincenzo and Ayo Dosunmu, Edwards knew his team needed him. And against the Spurs—a team he dropped 55 points on back in January despite a foot injury—he knows exactly how to make an impact.
Now, all eyes are on what comes next. One thing is certain: when Anthony Edwards says he's back, he means it.
