When you finish a season with a 5-12 record, change isn't just expected—it's essential. That's exactly the reality facing the Washington Commanders, and head coach Dan Quinn has wasted no time reshaping his coaching staff from the ground up.
Quinn has brought in two new coordinators to lead the team's transformation. On offense, he promoted David Blough from within the organization, elevating the former quarterbacks assistant to take the reins. On defense, he looked north, importing Daronte Jones from Minnesota, where the young coach studied under Brian Flores' highly respected defensive system.
Here's what makes this overhaul particularly intriguing: while Quinn has called plays himself in the past, he's made it clear he'll step back and let Jones run his own system. That means the Commanders are undergoing a complete schematic reboot—new terminology, fresh play designs, and an entirely new approach to the game.
These coaching hires were announced months ago, but the real work is just beginning. With rookies finally in the building for minicamp, Quinn and his staff now have the opportunity to teach the entire roster their new systems. And so far, the head coach likes what he sees.
Speaking to reporters at the Commanders' rookie minicamp on Friday, Quinn shared his early impressions of both coordinators, starting with Jones and the aggressive, adaptable defense he's bringing from Minnesota.
"From a leadership standpoint, man, is he organized—impeccably organized," Quinn said. "He's got a very detailed thought and approach to how things go, from the way he meets with the defensive staff to the way he meets with the players. I like that approach."
Quinn emphasized that Jones' thoroughness is a major asset for players learning a complex new system. "He hits every single step along the way. As a player, you like that because he's thorough. He goes through all the steps. It's not gray. There's a lot of clarity. Even though, at times, it can seem complex to what we're doing, there's actually a lot of clarity that goes with it. That's the part—from a leadership standpoint—that I've seen so far: the extreme organization and clarity of the teaching."
For Commanders fans, this kind of detailed, methodical approach is exactly what the franchise needs after a difficult season. With new systems, new terminology, and a fresh coaching identity, Washington is building something from the ground up—and Quinn is confident he has the right leaders in place to make it happen.
