The Minnesota Timberwolves entered this series with the Denver Nuggets as the team to beat, leading 3-2. But the winds have shifted dramatically. In their Game 4 victory, the Timberwolves lost two key players to devastating injuries. Anthony Edwards hyperextended his knee in the second quarter, and Donte DiVincenzo tore his right Achilles. Both are now sidelined for the remainder of this series and beyond.
The defending champion Nuggets seized that opening, winning Game 5 at home to force a pivotal Game 6 in Minneapolis. As expected, Nikola Jokic was the engine behind the victory, notching his second triple-double of the playoffs. When the Serbian star is orchestrating the offense, Denver's success flows through him. Jamal Murray has also been a scoring machine, averaging 26 points per game this postseason, ranking fifth among all playoff scorers.
With Edwards and DiVincenzo out, the Timberwolves have turned to their bench. Guards Ayo Dosunmu and Bones Hyland have stepped into larger roles. Dosunmu was electric in Game 4, dropping 43 points on an incredible 76.5% shooting from the field while going a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. Hyland has also seen his minutes climb above 20 per game, providing a much-needed spark.
While the Timberwolves are just one bad Jokic shooting night away from advancing to the Western Conference Semifinals, their long-term playoff hopes rest on when Edwards can return. If Minnesota can't close out the series at home tonight, they'll have to travel back to Denver for a winner-take-all Game 7.
