When you're the defending Indianapolis 500 champion, the last thing you want on opening day is a trip to the garage. But that's exactly where Alex Palou found himself during Tuesday's practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The four-time IndyCar champion and Chip Ganassi Racing driver ran into trouble early in the six-hour session, reporting a concerning noise from the rear of his No. 10 Honda. "There's something wrong," Palou radioed to his team. "My right rear." Fox Sports 1's Jamie Little later reported that Palou described hearing a distinct "clunk" from the car.
With less than an hour remaining in the opening practice, Palou was still stuck in the garage as the Ganassi crew worked to diagnose the mechanical issue. The setback couldn't have come at a worse time for the Spaniard, who is looking to defend his 2024 Indy 500 victory.
The numbers tell the story: Palou managed just 22 laps during the session and sat 32nd on the speed charts—second slowest among the 34 drivers. For context, that's a far cry from the dominant form fans expect from one of IndyCar's brightest stars.
While the early hiccup is certainly concerning, it's worth remembering that practice pace doesn't always predict race day performance. The Indianapolis 500 is a marathon, not a sprint, and teams often use these early sessions to test setups rather than chase lap times. Still, every lap of track time is precious at the Brickyard, and Palou will be eager to get back up to speed when practice resumes.
For now, all eyes are on the Chip Ganassi Racing garage to see if they can solve the mystery before the next session. One thing's for sure: the defending champ won't be content sitting at the back of the field for long.
