The cost of doing business is now a lot more.

The college basketball landscape has fundamentally changed, and the price of building a contender has skyrocketed. With the transfer portal in full swing, the conversation isn't just about who's available—it's about what they cost. The new NIL market has turned roster construction into a high-stakes financial game.

Consider this year's top prize: Kansas center Flory Bidunga. After a standout freshman season under Bill Self, reports swirled that his asking price reached a staggering $5 million, a sum he reportedly secured with Louisville. While that figure is an extreme outlier, it highlights the premium on elite talent. According to basketball analytics expert Evan Miyakawa, the market is particularly lopsided for certain positions.

"To obtain a center or a point guard of equivalent talent, it would cost $1.3 million for the center, while only $813,000 for the point guard," Miyakawa noted. "That means it costs 61% more NIL dollars to get a center of the same caliber as a point guard." The demand for dominant big men is driving their value through the roof.

So, what does a $1 million investment actually get you in this new era? For many programs, that sum is now the entry point for a significant rotation piece. Miyakawa's analysis suggests that with $1 million, a team could secure a borderline top-450 player nationally—a solid starter who can immediately impact winning.

This new financial reality is reshaping programs. Look at Kentucky's reported strategy last season, spending over $20 million on its roster. While that seems astronomical, under the current market metrics, some of Mark Pope's acquisitions might even be considered savvy. The brutal truth is that maintaining a top-tier program now requires a war chest, and for most, a seven-figure sum is simply the cost of doing business for a single key player.
