In a thrilling showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats until the very last out, West Morgan pulled off a dramatic comeback to punch their ticket to the North Regional tournament.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Rebels found themselves in a familiar position—needing a spark. Enter Chasity Rikard, who was 0-for-2 on the day and facing a Danville pitcher who had just retired nine straight batters. But with the weight of the moment on her shoulders, Rikard delivered when it mattered most.
"I thought to myself, 'Hit this ball for your team. Get your team started,'" Rikard recalled after the game.
And start them she did. Rikard's double broke the silence and ignited a chain reaction of three consecutive doubles from West Morgan, flipping the score to 2-1 in the blink of an eye. From there, Rikard took the circle and slammed the door with a scoreless seventh inning, sealing the Class 4A, Area 13 tournament semifinal victory.
"Once Chasity hit that line drive in the bottom of the sixth to start the inning, that just changed the whole game for us," said West Morgan head coach Morgan Weatherwax.
The win sends the Rebels to the North Regional tournament in Florence next week—their first regional appearance since 2024. But for this young squad, which features just two seniors and one starting junior, the journey is just beginning.
"I think this is only the start of something," said West Morgan's Payson Terry, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The game was a pitcher's duel from the start, with Danville's Kate Randolph and West Morgan's Alyssa Cleveland trading scoreless innings like heavyweight boxers feeling each other out. Danville finally struck first in the top of the third on a triple from Hallie Coker, but Cleveland responded by holding the Hawks scoreless for the next three innings—including a seven-pitch, 3-up-3-down fifth inning.
"Having my defense behind me just gives me a lot of confidence," Cleveland said. "I feel like my team trusts me, and they're really good in the field."
Cleveland finished with six innings pitched, allowing just three hits and striking out four. Meanwhile, Randolph went the distance for Danville, fanning six batters and surrendering five hits.
But for Weatherwax and her Rebels, this win is just the first step on a much bigger journey.
"I think if we keep rolling the ball like we have the past couple of weeks, we'll be in Oxford," she said, referring to the state tournament site.
Rikard summed it up best: "I think this is a really special team. You can't find a team that has better chemistry than us."
West Morgan will face the winner of Danville and Good Hope on Tuesday at 2 p.m. for the area championship, with the regional tournament looming just beyond.
