Victor Wembanyama's historic playoff performance has sparked controversy, with the Minnesota Timberwolves questioning whether all of his record-breaking blocks were actually legal.

The San Antonio Spurs star made NBA history in Game 1 of the conference semifinals on Monday, May 4, recording 12 blocks—breaking the previous playoff record by two. The 2026 Defensive Player of the Year was just one swat shy of Dwight Howard's record for blocks in a single playoff half, finishing with a triple-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Despite the Timberwolves walking away with a 104-102 road win, the celebration was short-lived. After reviewing game film, Minnesota players and coaches raised serious questions about the integrity of Wembanyama's defensive stats.

"Obviously, he had a historic night, but when we looked at 'em, at least four of 'em were goaltending, maybe even a fifth," Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch told reporters Tuesday. "To me, it's a little alarming that none of 'em were called."

The dispute adds an intriguing layer to what was already a memorable performance. At just 22 years old, Wembanyama has already established himself as a defensive force, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to win Defensive Player of the Year earlier this season—and the first unanimous vote for the award.

As the series shifts to Minnesota for Game 2, all eyes will be on how officials handle Wembanyama's unique combination of length and timing around the rim. For Timberwolves fans and players alike, the message is clear: they'll be watching every swat closely.
