Victor Wembanyama delivered a masterclass performance to put the San Antonio Spurs on the brink of the Western Conference finals, powering his team to a commanding 126-97 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 5 of their best-of-seven series.
The 22-year-old French phenom erupted for 27 points, including 18 in a breathtaking first quarter that set the tone for the night. It was a statement response after Wembanyama faced his first career ejection in Game 4 for elbowing an opponent—though he avoided any suspension and channeled that energy into a dominant showing.
"Very, very much," Wembanyama said when asked if he felt anxious about returning to the court. "I mean, I was fresh, feeling good. But honestly, it's hard to tell if it was just getting fired up. Obviously, I'm going to be excited with butterflies, you know. So excitement is not something abnormal."
The Spurs now hold a 3-2 series lead and can punch their ticket to the Western Conference finals with a win in Game 6 on Friday in Minneapolis. A victory would set up a showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder—the reigning NBA champions—who recently swept the Los Angeles Lakers in four games.
It wasn't all smooth sailing for San Antonio, however. The Spurs saw an 18-point second-quarter lead evaporate as Minnesota fought back to tie the game at 61-61 early in the third quarter. But this young Spurs team showed remarkable poise, responding with a blistering 30-12 run to take a 91-73 lead into the final frame before putting the game out of reach.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised his star's maturity under pressure. "The one word I'd like to use is just mature. There's a lot that's happened in the last 48 hours, in the last game, and I think how that young man came out tonight and played in a variety of ways, in a variety of situations, was extremely mature."
With Wembanyama leading the charge, the Spurs are now just one win away from a potential clash with the Thunder—a matchup that would pit basketball's brightest new star against the defending champions. All eyes will be on Minneapolis Friday night as San Antonio looks to close out the series in style.
