Welcome back, Super 8. MIAA Div. 1A playoffs to return for baseball, boys/girls hockey

The baseball Super 8 will return for the 2027 spring season. Boys and girls hockey Super 8 tournaments will be held beginning in the 2027-28 season.

The Super 8 is officially back. After a four-year pause that left players, coaches, and fans frustrated, the MIAA Board of Directors voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday, May 13, to revive the elite Division 1A tournaments for baseball, boys hockey, and girls hockey. The final tally? A decisive 21-3 in favor of bringing back the format that has produced some of the most memorable moments in Massachusetts high school sports history.

For those who have been following the debate, this is a major win for tradition and competition. The Super 8—often referred to simply as "The Show" for baseball and hockey's top tier—was controversially shelved in April 2021 by the MIAA's Tournament Management Committee. Critics argued the format was too exclusive, but supporters—including some of the state's most successful coaches—never stopped fighting for its return.

Here's the timeline: The baseball Super 8 tournament will make its comeback in the spring of 2027. The boys and girls hockey Super 8 tournaments will follow, debuting in the 2027-28 winter season. That gives athletic directors, coaches, and players plenty of time to prepare for what promises to be a thrilling return to the diamond and the ice.

"Love the format," said Braintree High baseball coach Bill O'Connell, whose Wamps captured two Super 8 crowns during the tournament's original run. "This isn't personal excitement because you need a special group and a special team to get there. But I think it's great for high school baseball. Whether we ever get there or not, I'm thrilled."

O'Connell has been one of the most vocal advocates for the Super 8's revival, and his enthusiasm is shared by coaches across the state. On the hockey side, BC High coach John Flaherty—whose Eagles won back-to-back Super 8 titles in 2018 and 2019—echoed that sentiment. "I was against eliminating the Super 8 from the beginning," Flaherty said. "I didn't understand why it happened. I'm glad it's back. I'm excited for our players. I've already started talking to our guys about what it means to play for a Super 8. Hopefully, the damage hasn't already been done to our sport by taking it away."

The vote marks a full-circle moment for a tournament that has long been the gold standard in Massachusetts high school athletics. For players dreaming of stepping onto the field or the ice under the bright lights of a Super 8 championship game, the wait is almost over. And for fans of the game, the return of the Super 8 means one thing: the best is yet to come.
