In the competitive world of high school softball, a new star is rising in the South Sound. Puyallup freshman pitcher Jaycee Kemp isn't just playing; she's announcing her arrival with authority, one strikeout at a time.
Puyallup head coach Alec Elliott first knew Kemp as a basketball player, but her mother, a JV basketball coach at the school, kept hinting at something special. "You should see her play softball," she'd say. Kemp herself would casually mention hitting 72 mph on walkthroughs. The hype was real, but the reality has been even more impressive.
"When you get to see it consistently, day in, day out, it was eye-opening," Elliott said. "She’s just unapologetically herself when she gets in the circle... like this alter-ego." That alter-ego has been utterly dominant. Just one month into her high school career, Kemp leads the South Sound with a staggering 151 strikeouts.
Her stats tell the story of a pitcher in complete command. She's 11-2 this spring with a microscopic 0.52 ERA. In 68 innings, she's notched double-digit strikeouts in 10 of her 13 starts, thrown nine shutouts, and allowed only two extra-base hits. Facing top-tier 4A SPSL competition, she relies on an overpowering fastball and a nasty curveball that leaves batters guessing.
This past week was a masterclass. Kemp spun 17 combined scoreless innings across three wins, surrendering just five total hits and striking out 32 batters. Victories over Auburn Mountainview, Olympia, and Sumner proved she can deliver under pressure.
The most exciting part? Coach Elliott believes she's only scratching the surface. As Kemp continues to develop her secondary pitches, like her changeup, her potential is limitless. For fans of the game and athletes gearing up for their own seasons, Jaycee Kemp is a name to remember—a testament to the power of confidence, raw talent, and fearless pitching.
