What a night at Camden Yards! The Orioles pulled off a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over the Yankees, thanks to a dramatic three-run homer from Coby Mayo that turned the game on its head.
For most of the night, it looked like the Yankees were in control. Left-hander Ryan Weathers was absolutely dealing, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning while striking out nine and walking just two over 101 pitches. But baseball is a game of moments, and the seventh inning delivered one of the season's most exciting twists.
Adley Rutschman broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single up the middle, and after Tyler O'Neill drew a one-out walk, Yankees manager Aaron Boone turned to reliever Brent Headrick (3-1). That's when Mayo—who came into the game hitting just .158—stepped up and crushed Headrick's third pitch deep into the left-field seats for a game-changing three-run homer.
The Orioles' bullpen held strong from there. Dietrich Enns (1-0) earned the win in relief of starter Brandon Young, and rookie Anthony Nunez locked down the final three outs for his second save. The game ended in dramatic fashion when pinch-runner José Caballero was thrown out trying to steal second in the ninth inning—a call that was initially safe but overturned on replay review.
Earlier, Ben Rice had put the Yankees ahead with a two-run homer in the third inning. But the loss extends New York's skid to four straight games, a stark contrast to their four-game sweep of Baltimore earlier this month, when they outscored the Orioles 39-10.
Both teams will be back at it Tuesday night, with the Yankees sending Will Warren (4-1, 3.46 ERA) to the mound. The Orioles hope to counter with lefty Trevor Rogers (2-3, 4.75), who's been sidelined since April 26 with an illness.
