It's a significant amount of cash.

The Los Angeles Lakers face a pivotal offseason following their playoff exit against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the financial stakes for Austin Reaves have never been clearer.

After a breakout season where he averaged 23.3 points and 5.5 assists per game on 49 percent shooting—albeit in just 51 games—Reaves is expected to decline his $14.9 million player option and enter unrestricted free agency. The question now is just how much money he'll be leaving on the table if he decides to walk away from the purple and gold.

According to contract projections, Reaves can re-sign with the Lakers on a massive five-year, $239 million deal. If he chooses to sign elsewhere, the best offer he can get is a four-year, $177 million contract. That's a difference of roughly $62 million—a significant sacrifice for any player, even one coming off a career year.

The Lakers already committed heavily to Luka Dončić with a three-year, $165 million extension last August, so president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka will need to weigh the luxury tax implications carefully. But with LeBron James' future also hanging in the balance, retaining a homegrown talent like Reaves could be critical to maintaining continuity.

For now, the math suggests both sides have plenty of incentive to stay together. Reaves has emerged as a reliable scoring option and fan favorite, while the Lakers can offer him the most money and a chance to compete alongside Dončić and James. The only question is whether the franchise is willing to pay the price—and whether Reaves is willing to bet on himself elsewhere.
