‘We’ll protect this field until they come’: Bentley University to host France during the World Cup

Bentley announced they’d host the French team back in March, but on Wednesday, they held a tour to show reporters the athletic facilities.

Bentley University is about to get a taste of world-class soccer, as the campus in Waltham, Massachusetts, prepares to host the reigning FIFA number-one-ranked team: France. Les Bleus, who recently reclaimed the top spot from Spain, will use Bentley's facilities as their training base during the upcoming World Cup.

The excitement on campus is palpable. "At first, I didn't believe it," said Bentley soccer player Sydney Deroche. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... It's very motivational for my team because we want to continue to hopefully take in the level they play at."

While the partnership was announced in March, the university recently showcased the facilities to reporters. The French squad will have full access to the grass soccer field, the baseball outfield, the weight room, treatment areas, and locker rooms.

The deal came together swiftly after French Head Coach Didier Deschamps toured the campus last month. His visit didn't go unnoticed. "It was like a madhouse," recalled senior Michael Haikal. "People were posting on all the media saying the French team is here... It was a big deal, and everybody knew about it."

This marks a historic first for Bentley, as France will be the inaugural national team to train there. The team will stay in Boston and commute to Waltham for their crucial pre-tournament preparations.

According to Athletic Director Vaughn Williams, the university is already hard at work ensuring everything is perfect, with a particular focus on the pitch itself. "This is the most important part of their stay," Williams stated. "We'll protect this field until they come."
