Oleksandr Usyk is gearing up for one of the most unique fights of his career, but the heavyweight champion's team is already looking ahead to what comes next—and they're keeping their options wide open.
The Ukrainian superstar is set to face kickboxer Rico Vanhoeven in a novelty bout staged in front of the Egyptian pyramids in just a few weeks. While this spectacle promises entertainment, the real intrigue lies in what follows. After this outing, Usyk will be required to make a WBC mandatory title defense, but there's growing uncertainty about whether he'll comply or simply vacate the belt to pursue other opportunities.
One potential target is Fabio Wardley, who defends his WBO heavyweight title against Daniel Dubois this weekend. A win there could put Wardley in prime position for a shot at Usyk—but according to Sergey Lapin, an executive for Usyk's promotional company, the British fighter will need to prove he belongs at the elite level.
"If Fabio Wardley proves himself at the highest level, he can definitely become part of that conversation," Lapin told Sky Sports.
Lapin revealed that Usyk remains motivated by the chance to become a three-time undisputed champion by fully re-unifying the heavyweight division. However, the team isn't committing to any single path forward.
"We don't build our plans around one name or one outcome. There are several strong contenders in the division, and we are focused on the biggest and most meaningful fights available," Lapin explained. "If it's Fabio Wardley, it could potentially be for undisputed. If it's Agit Kabayel, it would more likely be a title defense."
At this stage in his legendary career, Usyk is balancing legacy with business. Having already cemented his place among the all-time greats, he now has the freedom to explore the most lucrative and entertaining options. Fans won't have to wait long for clarity—Usyk will need to make a decision shortly after his showdown in Egypt.
