Warner Bros. Discovery is navigating a pivotal moment in sports media. Even as the company awaits its potential $110 billion acquisition by Paramount—CBS Sports' parent—WBD is pushing forward with its own ambitious programming plans, as revealed at its upfront presentation to advertisers this week.
The elephant in the room? Paramount CEO David Ellison, who's leading the acquisition. WBD co-head of sales Ryan Gould addressed it head-on with a lighthearted jab: "Before we go on, we do want to address the Ellison, I mean the elephant, in the room." He quickly reassured the audience, "Listen, we don't deflect. That's not who we are. Everyone here knows there's change ahead… We've been through change and challenges before. We don't flinch and we meet the moment."
With that settled, WBD rolled out its sports lineup, leaning heavily into live coverage. The network will feature MLB, the NHL, French Open tennis, NASCAR, and the Big 12 Conference, among other properties. TNT Sports broadcaster Adam Lefkoe highlighted these rights and teased an exciting new addition: Dunkman, a pro dunk league founded by NBA legend and Inside the NBA personality Shaquille O'Neal.
Notably absent from the presentation was any mention of an expanded March Madness. The NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament recently approved a 76-team format, and TNT Sports is set to be part of that coverage—but the network chose to keep that card close to its chest for now.
This upfront event stood out as the only one this week without an NFL rights holder, following presentations by NBC, Fox, Amazon, and Disney, with Netflix scheduled later Wednesday. The Paramount deal is expected to close by the third quarter of this year. If it goes through, the combined media giant would boast one of the most powerful sports rights portfolios in the industry—spanning nearly every major league except the NBA, including the NFL, March Madness, and more.
For fans and apparel enthusiasts alike, this means one thing: more live sports, more iconic moments, and more opportunities to gear up for the action ahead.
