The confetti has barely settled in Phoenix, but the college basketball world is already looking ahead. Mere hours after Michigan cut down the nets, ESPN analyst Jeff Borzello released his famously "way-too-early" top 25 for the 2026-27 season, and the Florida Gators find themselves in a tantalizing position: projected at No. 3.
This lofty ranking, however, comes with a massive, orange-and-blue asterisk. Florida's potential as a national title contender hinges entirely on the NBA draft decisions of its star frontcourt duo. Defensive Player of the Year Rueben Chinyelu and the versatile Alex Condon both possess significant pro potential. If they choose to return to Gainesville, the Gators' ceiling skyrockets.
"If both return, look out," Borzello notes, pointing to the established core that would surround them. Point guard Boogie Fland is already confirmed to be back, while role players like Urban Klavzar and Isaiah Brown gained valuable experience during last season's run. The recipe for a deep March run would be nearly complete.
The timing of these projections is no coincidence. The transfer portal is now officially open, and it will be the great reshuffler of these early rankings. For Coach Todd Golden, the portal presents both an opportunity and a contingency plan. Should Chinyelu or Condon depart, Florida will need to be aggressive in seeking replacements, especially after the exits of Micah Handlogten and Olivier Rioux.
For now, Gator Nation has permission to dream big. The foundation for a special season is in place, waiting on two critical decisions. If those stars align, the O'Connell Center will be the epicenter of college basketball excitement next winter.
