The San Francisco 49ers added another running back to their roster with the third-round selection of Indiana's Kaelon Black. His role is not yet known, but Black will likely have a chance to compete with Jordan James, Patrick Taylor and Isaac Guerendo for the RB2 role behind Christian McCaffrey.
Black, 24, rushed for 1,040 yards and 10 touchdowns on 186 carries, but he's also known as an adept pass-blocker. He began his career at James Madison before transferring to Indiana in 2024. The 49ers hope to shake the stigma of their Day 2 or Day 3 running back picks, which haven't panned out in the John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan era.
