The Washington Huskies are heading into the 2026 Big Ten Softball Tournament with something to prove. After a rough stretch to close the regular season—losing eight of their last nine conference games and 11 of their last 15 overall—the No. 5 seed Huskies are looking to flip the script when they face the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the opening round at College Park, Maryland.

Here's the good news for Washington: they've already shown they can dominate this opponent. Back in early April, the Huskies swept Minnesota in a three-game series, scoring 21 runs across those contests. That offensive firepower has been inconsistent lately—over their recent seven-game losing streak, they managed the same total of 21 runs. But facing a familiar foe could be just what the lineup needs to reignite.

One player to watch is junior third baseman Giselle Alvarez, who has been a spark plug all season. She leads the team with a .379 batting average, 66 hits, 53 RBIs, and 123 total bases. Her 15 home runs, 36 runs scored, and 1.122 OPS are all second on the squad. Alongside Alexis DeBoer and Jadyn Glab, Alvarez forms a middle of the order that has been among the Big Ten's best, helping the Huskies tie for sixth in the conference with 347 runs scored this year.

In the circle, head coach Heather Tarr will likely turn to sophomore Morgan Reimer. Despite some recent struggles, Reimer has been one of the conference's top pitchers, finishing the regular season with a 22-7 record, a 2.86 ERA, and a 1.34 WHIP over 159 1/3 innings. She's also recorded 124 strikeouts and 11 complete games, holding opponents to a .256 batting average.

The Huskies are hungry for their first Big Ten Tournament win after falling to Indiana in their tournament debut in 2025. With a familiar opponent in Minnesota and a lineup that's shown it can produce, Washington has a golden opportunity to get back on track. The game is set for 8:00 p.m. on the Big Ten Network—don't miss it.
