Washington Huskies third baseman Giselle Alvarez has been on a tear this season, and the Big Ten took notice. On Friday, the junior earned a well-deserved spot on the All-Big Ten First Team, capping off a year that saw her transform into one of the conference's most feared hitters.
Alvarez's power surge was the story of her campaign. She launched a career-high 15 home runs, shattering her previous best of nine from her sophomore year. But her impact went far beyond the long ball. The 42 jersey led the Huskies in batting average (.376), hits (68), RBIs (53), and total bases (126)—all while starting every single game and anchoring the middle of the lineup.
Her .376 average was complemented by an impressive 1.110 OPS, 11 doubles, 37 runs scored, and even five stolen bases, showing she's more than just a power hitter. Defensively, Alvarez was equally reliable, primarily manning the hot corner at third base but also seeing time at first. She committed just three errors on 127 chances, good for a .976 fielding percentage, with 78 assists and 46 putouts.
Alvarez is one of five Huskies to earn All-Big Ten honors. First baseman Alexis DeBoer joined her on the First Team, while pitcher Morgan Reimer was named to the Second Team. Shortstop Melody Acevedo and outfielder Kaycie Burdick both earned spots on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team, highlighting the depth of talent in Seattle.
For Washington fans, Alvarez's breakout is a sign of things to come. With her combination of power, average, and defensive reliability, she's quickly becoming the kind of player who can carry a team deep into the postseason—and a name to watch for any softball gear enthusiast looking to rep the next big star.
