The Washington Commanders have made a savvy veteran addition to their secondary, re-signing cornerback Antonio Hamilton Sr. following this weekend's rookie minicamp. While the team opted not to sign any tryout players from the camp, they used their one open roster spot to bring back Hamilton, who now rounds out the 91-man roster.
Hamilton first joined the Commanders in August of last year, arriving during training camp after the team's initial preseason game. He began the season on the practice squad but was elevated to the active roster just two weeks later when Jonathan Jones landed on injured reserve. The veteran corner proved his worth over the course of the season, appearing in 15 games—starting one—and logging significant playing time with nearly half the defensive snaps plus 115 special teams snaps.
The move comes at a crucial time for Washington's defensive backfield. After releasing starter Marshon Lattimore, the Commanders moved quickly in free agency to sign Amik Robertson and Ahkello Witherspoon. However, the team notably did not select a cornerback in the 2025 NFL Draft, instead adding just one undrafted free agent at the position, Fred Davis II. With Mikey Sainristil and Trey Amos expected to start alongside Robertson, the depth chart is looking thin—and Hamilton's experience provides a reliable veteran presence in the mix.
For a team looking to solidify its secondary ahead of training camp, bringing back a familiar face like Hamilton is a low-risk, high-reward move that adds both depth and leadership to the locker room.
