A kicking competition in Ashburn!

The Washington Commanders are gearing up for an intriguing kicking competition in Ashburn this offseason, and at the center of it all is undrafted free agent Drew Stevens from Iowa. While undrafted rookies often face long odds, Stevens brings a powerful leg and a knack for clutch kicks that could make him a dark horse to watch.

A three-time All-Big Ten honoree, Stevens leaves Iowa as one of the program's most decorated kickers. He holds multiple school records, including 76 career field goals, 12 field goals of 50-plus yards, and a 58-yard bomb that tied Kinnick Stadium's all-time record. Over four seasons, he connected on 76 of 95 field goals (80%) and was nearly automatic on extra points, hitting 124 of 126 (98.4%). He also delivered four game-winning kicks, proving his poise under pressure.

Scouts see a kicker with explosive leg speed and impressive range, but consistency remains a question mark. Per NFL.com's Lance Zierlein, Stevens has "an explosive delivery but inconsistent results," noting he missed three of his kicks from 40-49 yards last season. On the plus side, he handles kickoffs and is athletic enough to chase down returns, adding value beyond just placekicking.

Stevens' "twitchy leg whip" generates serious power, as evidenced by his career-long 58-yarder in 2025. But his journey hasn't been without bumps—he was even benched against Nebraska as a sophomore before bouncing back strong. That resilience, combined with his physical tools, could appeal to coaches looking for a mentally tough competitor.

For Commanders fans, Stevens represents more than just a roster filler. He's a reminder that the fight for an NFL dream often comes down to seizing one opportunity. With a strong leg and a proven track record of bouncing back, he might just make the competition in Ashburn a lot more interesting.
