As the regular season winds down, the Washburn Ichabods are gearing up for a pivotal home stand that could set the stage for a deep postseason run. Fresh off a hard-fought Turnpike Tussle series victory last weekend, Washburn now sits at 20-17 overall and 16-17 in the MIAA. For head coach Harley Douglas, the timing couldn't be better.
"I think it's a huge lift for us," Douglas said. "In order for us to get where we want to get, we've got to win the tournament. That's our goal, and that's what we wanted to do—play our best at the end of the year."
The Ichabods' confidence is building, and right-handed pitcher Maclane Finley sees the momentum. "Recently, we've shown that we can play with anybody," Finley said. "If we just keep playing the game we've been playing and put it together for nine innings, I have no doubt we will walk away with a series win on Saturday."
Standing in their way, however, is a formidable challenge: the No. 5 ranked Pittsburg State Gorillas. Pitt State leads the MIAA in batting average (.357) and on-base percentage (.478), and they've crossed the plate 536 times this season—56 more than Washburn. The Ichabods will need to be at their best to contain one of the most potent offenses in the conference.
Washburn counters with a solid .292 team batting average, highlighted by the standout performance of junior outfielder Ian Luce. A Manhattan native, Luce is tearing the cover off the ball with a .412 average, 82 hits, and 46 RBI, making him one of the toughest outs in the MIAA.
Game 1 against Pitt State is set for Thursday at 4 p.m., and with postseason aspirations on the line, every pitch counts. Whether you're a die-hard Ichabods fan or just love the game, this weekend promises high-stakes action that no baseball enthusiast should miss.
