The Golden State Warriors are undergoing a major shakeup on their coaching staff. While head coach Steve Kerr was locked in with a multi-year extension, two of his top assistants—Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse—will not be returning next season after their contracts expired.
Stotts, a veteran coach with over three decades of NBA experience, is reportedly looking to pursue another head coaching opportunity. He first took the helm with the Atlanta Hawks in 2002, but his most memorable run came with the Portland Trail Blazers from 2012 to 2021, where he led the team to consecutive playoff appearances and a Western Conference Finals berth in 2019. Stotts returned to Golden State in 2024 for his second stint as an assistant, having previously served under Mike Montgomery in the 2004-05 season. Reflecting on his time with the Warriors, Stotts shared, "I enjoyed my time with Steve, the staff and players. My two years there were fulfilling. Nothing but well-wishes."
Stackhouse, who joined the Warriors alongside Stotts in 2024, also has his sights set on a head coaching role. Before stepping onto the NBA sidelines, he spent six seasons at Vanderbilt, earning 2023 SEC Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Commodores to a 22-15 record. His tenure in Nashville ended after a tough follow-up season, but his coaching pedigree remains strong.
The Warriors' coaching carousel doesn't stop there. Earlier this year, assistant Chris DeMarco left in January to become head coach of the New York Liberty, prompting a promotion for Kris Weems within the hierarchy. As Golden State fills out Kerr's bench, one intriguing candidate has emerged: Willie Green, who began his coaching journey with the Warriors as an assistant in 2016 before moving on to the Phoenix Suns and eventually serving as head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans from 2021.
With a championship core still in place, the Warriors are clearly looking to surround Kerr with the right mix of experience and fresh perspectives. The coming weeks will reveal who steps up to help guide this storied franchise back to contention.
