Wareham's Aaron Cote, the first SouthCoast player to win three basketball state titles, signs to play for top JUCO program.

In the world of high school basketball, few stories capture the relentless pursuit of greatness quite like Aaron Cote's journey. The Wareham standout, who made history as the first SouthCoast player to win three state titles, has taken his biggest shot yet—signing with Coffeyville Community College, one of the nation's top JUCO programs.

For Cote, the decision wasn't just about basketball; it was about betting on himself. "Their program has a good history," said Cote, the 2026 Standard-Times Boys Basketball Player of the Year and Dave Cowens Award winner. "The assistant coach told me about all the players who came through and went on to the NBA G League or Division I. I thought, 'I might as well take the shot.'"

That shot represents a pivotal stepping stone. While offers closer to home in Massachusetts were on the table, Cote chose to venture far from the familiar shores of Wareham. "I feel like this is a big stepping stone," he explained. "I had choices to stay in Massachusetts, but I chose to go far away and just lock in on basketball and school."

Wareham head coach Steve Faniel sees the move as a masterstroke of focus. "When we were looking at schools, we considered many pathways, but we asked: what is the path of least resistance to reach your goal? He's there to play basketball and do school work. With nothing else around him, I think he can lock in and focus on doing that."

Cote's ultimate goal? To compete at the highest level of college basketball possible. "It feels like a dream come true, but it's just the start of where I want to go in life," he said. "It's a stepping stone to playing college basketball. It's always been one of my dreams."

A year ago, that dream seemed distant. A season-ending ankle injury sidelined Cote for most of his junior campaign and required surgery. But champions are defined by how they respond to adversity, and Cote came back stronger than ever. As a senior, he powered Wareham to its third straight state championship in four years, averaging 25.1 points, 4.3 assists, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game. Along the way, he became the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,593 points.

From injury to history-maker, Aaron Cote's journey is a testament to resilience—and a reminder that sometimes, the biggest shots are the ones we take when the stakes are highest.
