For Nikita Prothero, Wales' newest rugby cap, the decision to switch allegiances was never really a choice at all—it was "non-negotiable."
Of the 25 tattoos etched across her body, the one she points to most proudly is the Welsh word "hiraeth" inked on her forearm. It's a term that can mean many things, but for this England-born utility back, it represents a deep longing for home—and for Wales.
"My whole family lives in Wales, but my parents moved to London when they were growing up, so we were kind of the English of the Welsh," Prothero explains with a smile. Despite representing England at Under-18s and Under-20s levels, and the allure of playing for the world's best side, she chose the three feathers over the Red Roses.
"The switch to Wales was kind of non-negotiable in terms of where my journey was at and the relationship I already had with Lynny (Wales head coach Sean Lynn) from being at Hartpury College," she says.
Now 23, Prothero admits to being an introvert with a slight tattoo addiction—but she's also a player hungry for game time. After joining Sale Sharks three years ago, she found herself sidelined more than she'd like this season. "I was unhappy with my game time at Sharks," she confesses. "The season before I played about 20 games, and this year I was only on my second. I wanted more from myself."
Her solution? A move to Gwalia Lightning in the Celtic Challenge, where she's been playing most of her rugby this season. "I want to be playing week-in and week-out," she says. "The Championship in England just doesn't provide that kind of level at the moment."
Those performances for Lightning caught the eye of head coach Sean Lynn, who named her among nine uncapped players in his Six Nations squad. Last Saturday, she made her debut on the wing in Wales' away defeat to Ireland—a bittersweet milestone for a player who's finally found her rugby home.
For fans looking to channel that same passion for the game, nothing says commitment like repping your nation's colors. Whether you're chasing your own "hiraeth" or just love the sport, the right kit makes all the difference.
