Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny announces he will retire at the end of the season.

Welsh rugby legend Leigh Halfpenny has announced he will hang up his boots at the end of the season, bringing down the curtain on a glittering 18-year career that saw him become one of the most decorated players in the sport's history.

The 37-year-old full-back, who earned 101 caps for Wales and scored 801 points, ranks third on the nation's all-time points scorers list, trailing only his mentor Neil Jenkins and Stephen Jones. His remarkable journey also included four Tests for the British and Irish Lions, where he was named man of the series during the triumphant 2013 tour against Australia.

Halfpenny's career took him across the globe, from his boyhood club Cardiff to stints with Toulon, Scarlets, Crusaders, and Harlequins. Along the way, he lifted the European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup, cementing his legacy as a player who could shine on any stage.

His retirement follows recent announcements from fellow back-three stars Liam Williams and George North, marking the end of an era for Welsh rugby. But Halfpenny's story began humbly at Gorseinon RFC in Swansea, where his grandfather Malcolm would take him for kicking practice from a young age—a foundation that shaped his legendary accuracy and composure under pressure.

"Starting out aged six down at Gorseinon RFC, I could never have imagined the journey rugby would take me on," Halfpenny wrote on social media. "Rugby has given me some of the best moments of my life, and I've been incredibly fortunate to have played the game I love for the last 18 years. It's always going to be difficult to walk away, but the time feels right."

Halfpenny made his Wales debut at just 19 against South Africa in November 2008 and quickly became a cornerstone of the national team. He was part of the Grand Slam-winning side in 2012, added Six Nations triumphs in 2013 and 2021, and played in World Cup semi-finals in 2011 and 2019. In 2013, he was named Six Nations Player of the Tournament and BBC Sport Wales Personality of the Year, finishing second only to Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in the network's overall award.

After announcing his international retirement in October 2023, Halfpenny had one final moment in a Wales jersey the following month, playing in an uncapped victory against the Barbarians alongside legends like Alun Wyn Jones and Justin Tipuric. It was a fitting farewell for a player who gave everything to the red shirt.

As we celebrate Halfpenny's incredible career, fans can honor his legacy by rocking the same gear that defined his journey—from the boots that nailed those crucial kicks to the kit that stood up to the toughest tackles.
