Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny announces he will retire at the end of the season.

Leigh Halfpenny, one of Welsh rugby's most decorated players, has announced he will hang up his boots at the end of the season. The 37-year-old full-back leaves behind a legacy that spans 101 international caps, 801 points for Wales, and a reputation as one of the game's most reliable and respected figures.

Halfpenny's journey began at Gorseinon RFC in Swansea, where his grandfather Malcolm would take him for kicking practice from a young age. That early dedication paid off in spectacular fashion. He made his Wales debut at just 19 against South Africa in 2008, and from there, his career soared. He played a key role in the Grand Slam triumph of 2012 and was part of Six Nations title-winning sides in 2013 and 2021. His performances in the 2013 British & Irish Lions series against Australia earned him the man-of-the-series award, a highlight of a career filled with them.

At the club level, Halfpenny's journey was just as impressive. He started and finished his career with Cardiff, but also wore the jerseys of Toulon, Scarlets, Crusaders, and Harlequins. Along the way, he lifted the European Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup, proving his class on the biggest stages. His 801 points for Wales place him third on the nation's all-time scorers list, behind only mentors Neil Jenkins and Stephen Jones.

Halfpenny's announcement comes in the wake of fellow back-three stars Liam Williams and George North also revealing their retirements in recent weeks, marking the end of an era for Welsh rugby. In a heartfelt social media post, Halfpenny reflected on his journey: "Starting out aged six down at Gorseinon RFC, I could never have imagined the journey rugby would take me on. None of it would have been possible without those people that supported me from the beginning. Rugby has given me some of the best moments of my life and I've been incredibly fortunate to have played the game I love for the last 18 years. It's always going to be difficult to walk away but the time feels right as I reflect back on a career I'm grateful for."

As fans look back on a career defined by pinpoint accuracy under the high ball, fearless tackling, and a calm demeanor in the most pressurized moments, Halfpenny's legacy is secure. He was named Six Nations Player of the Tournament in 2013 and BBC Sport Wales Personality of the Year, finishing second only to Andy Murray in the overall BBC award. He played in two World Cup semi-finals (2011 and 2019) and represented Wales in three World Cups overall. After stepping away from international rugby in October 2023, he made one final appearance in a Wales jersey the following month in an uncapped victory.

For rugby fans and players alike, Halfpenny's career is a masterclass in dedication, skill, and sportsmanship. As the season winds down, the rugby world will be watching to give one of its finest a fitting send-off.
