The curtain has officially fallen on the playing career of one of Wales' modern icons. Captain and former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from professional football with immediate effect.

The 35-year-old, who had been a free agent since departing Mexican side Pumas UNAM last year, closes a remarkable chapter that saw him become a cornerstone for both club and country. His elegant, intelligent midfield play defined an era for Welsh football.

Ramsey's legacy is immense. He retires as a true Welsh great, having earned 86 caps and scored 21 goals. His crowning achievement was a starring role in Wales' unforgettable journey to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, a performance that earned him a spot in UEFA's official Team of the Tournament. He later helped lead the Dragons to their first World Cup in 64 years at Qatar 2022.

At club level, he will forever be remembered as an Arsenal hero. During his 11 years in North London, he lifted the FA Cup three times, memorably scoring the dramatic extra-time winner in the 2014 and 2017 finals.
