Wales and Scarlets lock Jake Ball announces he has played his final professional rugby game as he will retire at the end of the season.

Welsh rugby legend Jake Ball has officially announced his retirement from professional rugby, bringing an end to a distinguished career that saw him earn 50 caps for Wales and make 148 appearances for the Scarlets. The 34-year-old lock, currently sidelined with a hand injury, will hang up his boots at the conclusion of the season, citing "injuries and future business commitments" as the driving factors behind his decision.

Ball's journey in rugby has been nothing short of remarkable. Born in Ascot but raised in Australia from the age of 16, he arrived in Llanelli in 2012 after a stint with Super Rugby side Western Force. Over the next nine years, he became a cornerstone of the Scarlets' pack, playing a pivotal role in their historic Pro12 title win in 2017 and their run to the European Champions Cup semi-final the following year. After a brief return to Australia and a spell with Japanese club NEC Green Rockets, Ball rejoined the Scarlets in summer 2025, making 13 appearances this season.

Unfortunately, fans won't see him take the field one last time. A hand injury will keep him out of the final United Rugby Championship match against the Dragons at Parc y Scarlets on Saturday. Instead, Ball will be in the stands with his wife, Christie, and their children, ready to bid a heartfelt farewell to the home supporters who have cheered him on for over a decade.

"It feels like the right time," Ball shared. "I've had a few head knocks, a couple of injuries. I think my body is telling me something. I am glad I came back and gave it another go at the Scarlets. I've enjoyed being back in the environment and being a professional rugby player again. To be able to retire here, at the club where it all started for me, makes it more special."

Reflecting on the highlights of his career, Ball couldn't help but praise the passionate Scarlets faithful. "The Scarlets supporters here are an awesome bunch. Their passion for the team is incredible, and they have been amazing to me and my family. There have been some incredible highs—the lead-up to winning the championship in 2017 and Europe the following year. That was something else."

As Ball prepares for life after rugby, his legacy as a warrior on the field and a beloved figure in the Welsh rugby community is secure. For fans and teammates alike, his retirement marks the end of an era, but the memories of his powerful carries, lineout dominance, and unwavering commitment will endure.
