Wales and Scarlets fans, it's time to raise a glass to a true warrior of the pitch. Lock Jake Ball has officially announced his retirement from professional rugby at the age of 34, bringing a stellar career to a close at the end of the season.
The hard-hitting second-row, who has been sidelined with a hand injury, will miss Saturday's final United Rugby Championship clash against the Dragons at Parc y Scarlets. But he'll be there in spirit—and in person—with his wife Christie and their children to bid a heartfelt farewell to the home supporters.
Ball's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Born in Ascot but raised in Australia from age 16, he made his mark with the Western Force before arriving in Llanelli in 2012. Over two stints with the Scarlets, he racked up 148 appearances and was a cornerstone of their 2017 Pro12 title-winning squad. That championship season, followed by a European Champions Cup semi-final run in 2018, remains the highlight of his club career.
On the international stage, Ball earned 50 caps for Wales, including a proud role in the 2019 Grand Slam triumph and a World Cup semi-final appearance. His physicality and work rate made him a fan favorite in the red jersey.
"It feels like the right time," Ball said, reflecting on his decision. "I've had a few head knocks, a couple of injuries. My body is telling me something. I'm glad I came back and gave it another go at the Scarlets. To be able to retire here, at the club where it all started for me, makes it more special."
After initially planning to finish his playing days with Japanese club NEC Green Rockets, Ball returned to the Scarlets in summer 2025 and made 13 appearances this season. But injuries and future business commitments have led him to hang up his boots.
"The Scarlets supporters here are an awesome bunch," he added. "Their passion for the team is incredible, and they have been amazing to me and my family. There have been some incredible highs—the lead-up to winning the championship in 2017 and Europe the following year. That was a special time with a special group of players. I will always remember the friendships and the people who made my time here so memorable."
As Ball prepares for life after rugby, the sport bids farewell to a player who gave his all every time he stepped onto the field. For fans of the Scarlets and Wales, his legacy of grit, loyalty, and big-match performances will not be forgotten.
