The door of opportunity swung open for Jorja Aiono, and true to her Samoan heritage, she didn't just walk through it—she tore it down.
The powerful teenage forward, just 19 years old, has burst onto the international stage with Wales in the Women's Six Nations, turning heads with her physicality and relentless work rate. After an outstanding debut against Scotland, Aiono earned consecutive starts against rugby heavyweights France and England, looking every bit at home among the game's elite.
"I play like my dad," admits the Swansea-born lock, whose father Nio was a formidable back-row forward for Neath, Ebbw Vale, and Llandovery. "My dad's from Samoa, he was a big carrier as well. He used to play in New Zealand and Australia."
Rugby runs deep in the Aiono family. Her uncle Afa captained the Samoa Sevens team, and her brother represented Wales at under-20 level. That heritage has helped her find kinship with teammate Sisilia Tuipulotu, another Polynesian player who has taken the teenager under her wing. "We're kind of a family," Aiono says.
Currently studying sports science at Hartpury University and playing for Premiership Women's Rugby champions Gloucester-Hartpury, Aiono caught the attention of Wales head coach Sean Lynn through her performances for Celtic Challenge side Brython Thunder. She was one of nine uncapped players named in the Six Nations squad—and was immediately thrust into the starting lineup for the tournament opener at the Principality Stadium.
"It was such a shock, though it's nice to see the coaches believe in me," she says. "I just couldn't stop smiling on the day, it's all come so quickly. It's been a privilege. I was really impressed by myself. It's nice to see that hard work does pay off."
Lynn has praised Aiono's physicality as a key differentiator, noting that her work rate embodies the direction the women's game is heading. As Wales prepare to face Ireland next, all eyes will be on this rising star who carries the power of her heritage and the promise of a bright future in every run, tackle, and lineout.
