Here are the standout nominees for this week:
JJ McDaniel, Hale County Softball: McDaniel put on an all-around clinic in the Wildcats' 19-4 win against Greensboro during the AHSAA Class 3A Area 7 Tournament. She went 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in three RBIs, scoring three runs, and stealing three bases. On the mound, she pitched two innings, allowing two unearned runs while striking out three batters. A true two-way star!
Jessie Hartley, Hillcrest Softball: Hartley was unstoppable at the plate, going 7-for-10 with a double, two triples, and six RBIs in wins over Prattville (12-11) and Tuscaloosa County (20-19). Her walk-off single in the comeback win against the Wildcats sealed the deal, proving she thrives under pressure.
Zy'Iona Crooks, Holt Track and Field: Crooks sprinted to a second-place finish in the AHSAA Class 4A 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.29 seconds. That speed and precision on the track earned her a spot among the area's elite.
Kiley Brewer, Northridge Soccer: Brewer was a wall in goal for the Jaguars, recording five saves and allowing just one goal in a 2-1 win over St. Paul's. Her performance propelled Northridge to the AHSAA Class 6A girls state championship—talk about stepping up when it matters most.
Abigail Postell, Paul W. Bryant Track and Field: Postell dominated the shot put at the AHSAA Class 6A championships, winning the title with a throw of over 43 feet—nearly 4 feet farther than any competitor. That's the kind of power that defines a champion.
These athletes have shown incredible skill, determination, and sportsmanship. Now it's your turn to decide who takes home the Athlete of the Week honors. Vote now before the polls close at noon on Thursday, May 14!
