The competition is heating up in the Volusia-Flagler area, and it's time to cast your vote for the Halifax Health Girls Athlete of the Week for May 4-9. Last week, Seabreeze softball standout Alyssa Checho took home the honors with an impressive 56% of the vote. The freshman pitcher delivered back-to-back shutouts against Pine Ridge and Bishop Moore, helping her team secure a district title. Now, a new slate of talented athletes is vying for your support.

Our nominees this week showcase incredible skill across multiple sports. Camora Pate, a junior from Deltona, made a game-changing play in the Region 2-2A finals against Hernando. She scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 100-yard pick-6—her second interception of the game. Over at Spruce Creek, junior Reese Cianciarulo dominated on the mound, allowing just two hits in a complete-game shutout of Apopka in the Region 1-7A quarterfinals, while striking out two batters.

Track and field stars also shine bright. Flagler Palm Coast senior Karina Marcelus captured the Class 4A state title in the triple jump with a 12.41-meter effort and finished as runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles. Meanwhile, Spruce Creek senior Mikayla Palmer claimed 4A gold in the high jump, clearing 1.72 meters.

Voting is open now and closes at 10 a.m. Saturday. You can vote once per device per hour, so make your voice heard. Our poll is presented by Halifax Health, and we pull nominees from scores and stats submitted by coaches or posted online. Let's celebrate these amazing competitors—just like they respect the game, we ask you to respect the integrity of the vote. No bots, no pay-to-vote schemes—just pure sportsmanship.
