Spring in Louisiana has been nothing short of electric, and as the 2025-26 school year winds down, the action on the field and track is reaching a fever pitch. From Sulphur to Baton Rouge, our local athletes are making their mark in postseason play, and it's time to recognize the best of the best.

This week's Daily Advertiser Athlete of the Week nominees for May 4-10 represent the cream of the crop across baseball, softball, tennis, and track and field. With the LHSAA Baseball State Tournament battling through weather delays and St. Thomas More sweeping the Division II tennis state championships, the competition has been fierce. Meanwhile, the 2026 LHSAA Outdoor Track & Field State Championships in Baton Rouge saw champions crowned in everything from distance running to field events, with the 337 area well represented on every stage.

Here are your nominees, each bringing their A-game when it mattered most:

Andre Abshire, Track & Field, Ascension Episcopal: The senior Blue Gator capped his season in style, taking home first place in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles at the Class 1A state meet. His times of 14.50 seconds and 37.78 seconds made him one of three state champions from his school.

Khyra Abshire, Softball, Northside Christian: When the Class C state championship was on the line, Abshire delivered. She powered the Warriors to a 10-4 victory over Claiborne Christian with two doubles, three RBIs, and two runs scored, proving clutch at every at-bat.

Luke Green, Track & Field, Lafayette Christian Academy: For the second straight year, Green owns the 400-meter crown in Class 2A. The senior crossed the line first at 49.34 seconds and also anchored the Knights' winning 4x100 relay team as the second leg.

Luke Hewitt, Baseball, Catholic-N.I.: With the Panthers' semifinal matchup against University Lab hanging in the balance, the junior pitcher stepped up to the plate and delivered the game-winning hit, showing that in baseball, every moment counts.

Voting closes at 9 a.m. on Friday, so make your voice heard and celebrate the athletes who are making this spring one for the history books. Whether you're cheering from the stands or gearing up for your own season, these performances remind us why we love the game.
